How to apply for UDID card?

Unique ID for Persons with Disabilities is termed to be a disability identity card issued for Indian citizens. The UDID helps to create a National Database for PWDs. The UDID project has been initiated to solve the inefficacies and to ease the delivery of government schemes and its impact. In this article, I will walk you through the benefits of UD ID, documents required and the step-by-step guide to apply.

Benefits of UDID card:

Carrying numerous papers and files? This UDID card will be the single document of identification and verification of the PWDs for availing various benefits. The UDID Card will also help in stream-lining the tracking of the physical and financial progress of beneficiaries at all levels of hierarchy of implementation –such as village, District, State and National level. The UDID card will help to open the avenue for online applications which was not the case earlier. The user can quote the unique identification number to avail the intended services. UDID card is expected to counter duplication, misinformation and illegal participation of the public who are not a part of the program.

Documents required:

  1. Scanned copy of the recent color photo.
  2. Scanned image of signature / thump impression (Optional)
  3. Scanned copy of Address Proof (Aadhar/Driving License/ any other valid government document)
  4. Scanned copy of Identity Proof (Aadhar Card/PAN Card/Driving License)
  5. Scanned copy of Disability Certificate (Only for those Persons with Disability who have been issued disability Certificate is by the competent Authority)

Step by step guide for applying:

  • Log in to the website https://www.swavlambancard.gov.in/
  • Find the register option on the upper right side above the search bar.
  • After clicking the register option, you will have four stages to carry for submission.
  1. Personal details,
  2. Disability details,
  3. Employment details,
  4. Identity details.

Enter all the relevant details as per the documents. If you are using a screen reader, accessing the edit box and tick boxes will be a small problem since the page is viewed in both English and your chosen regional Indian language.

  • If you have your disability certificate provided by the competent authority such as form II. Or National disability ID card, then your work will be so simple by just uploading them. Otherwise, you are required to verify your disability status by filling the form.
  • In the employment details section, fill in your annual income and other relevant information. If you are a student, you can skip most of the question fields.
  • In the fourth stage, verify your identity by submitting your Aadhar card.
  • Once you submit all of your details, preview the form and check for any error or miss-information. If you are fine with all details, click submit and download the receipt and enrollment number PDF.
  • Use your enrolment number to track the application.

Note:

The number of days it will take to process and deliver your card is not guaranteed by the government of India. Hopefully you will receive your card within a month or two.

To conclude, applying for the UD ID card is very easy but it will take so much of your time to scan and upload your documents within the stipulated image size and dimensions. I find this as a major accessibility constraint. Also, the importance of UDID card is not properly established by the government. In some places, the card is considered invalid since the government employees are not aware of this initiative. Either way, getting this ID card will help us to eliminate various documents and hopefully ease our life in the future.
