Getting the essentials right

Whenever you are opening an account, it is advised to get a debit card with all the necessary features enabled. ATM withdrawal, E-commerce transaction and POS transactions are the few basic features that have to be enabled at the very beginning. The reason for explicitly mentioning all these things is to make you aware of the features and get it right away. If you are a person who cannot travel a lot to the bank, then it is important to do everything at one go. Some banks are hesitant to issue a debit card if you are a person with a disability. There is no such law that prevents banks from providing a debit card to a person with a disability. Infect, the Reserve Bank of India has a long list of instructions to banks in order to facilitate seamless services to persons with disabilities. Even then there might be instances when the bank managers go by their own rule book and go further to protect you by denying the card. They argue that someone will misuse your card or snatch it from you. So silly right? But this is the hard reality that happens all over India, especially in the public sector banks.

If you are facing this problem, try explaining to the bank manager that you are capable of maintaining the card by keeping it safe. Sometimes, this could be a simple communication problem where a simple explanation will serve the purpose. In some instances, you can write a letter in detail that explains your abilities and consciousness in maintaining a debit card. Either way, never ever give up your right to avail the essential services from banks.

How to safeguard your debit card?

OK, I got my card’ but how do I keep it safe? How do I prove that I am capable of managing it? Well, that is very easy. Keep in mind the falling hacks:

  • Keep your card with you and only with you. Don’t give it to any one for any reason.
  • Make sure your correct phone number is linked to the bank account as the important information related to transactions and security will be delivered here.
  • When you are taking somebody to the ATM, always enter the secret pin on your own. Locate the numbers by identifying a tactile mark on number 5 in the keypad.
  • Never share the OTP with anyone even if they claim that they are from the concerned bank.
  • If you cannot read the information in the card by yourself, get help from your trusted source and write it in a secured place where no one can access except you.
  • The best way to keep the information safe is to put that extra effort and memorise it.

The second document you need to avail government schemes is the Aadhar card. This is of no surprise that you need this card to avail all government services including the special services for persons with disability. The document is generally used to verify your address and proof of identity. Always attach a photocopy of the Aadhar card with your disability ID card to get the services at a faster rate. You can also have the PDF version of Aadhar for online applications. Be careful with the OTP while you authenticate Aadhar with e-sign.
